Labiaplasty reduces the size of one or both sets of labia minora. Labiaplasty reduces the size of one or both inner labia. It may also be used to repair the labia following injury or after childbirth. Labiaplasty is for women who have a problem with large or asymmetric inner labia or related female genital issues. Labiaplasty permits the reduction of large labia to reduce their outward appearance and correct irregular shapes.
The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia, as local anesthesia would distort the labia. The procedure takes about an hour.
With the rising popularity of bikini waxing, many women have become more aware of the appearance of their genitals want to obtain a more appealing ‘look’.
The March 2007 issue of Plastic Surgery News, published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that some labiaplasty patients simply “have a desire to look neat,” while a majority of patients want the procedure “for a combination of aesthetics and to alleviate discomfort, be it during intercourse, wearing tight clothes or participating in horseback riding and other sports.”
After labiaplasty, the vulva has a more youthful look as the labia minora no longer protrude outside the outer vaginal lips. In cases where there is too much fat padding over the mons pubis, or pubic mound, Dr. Jervis may perform liposuction.
