What is CoolSculpting and how does it work?

CoolSculpting is a process of non-invasive subcutaneous fat removal via a controlled cooling process, which can often be an alternative to liposuction. It involves no needles, no surgery or no downtime. Patients can resume daily activities, including work and exercise, immediately following treatment.

During the CoolSculpting Procedure, an external applicator which delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area to specifically target underlying fat and leaves surface skin tissue unaffected. When fat cells are exposed to a precise preset cooling (above the freezing point of water), a process of natural gradual removal is triggered, which ultimately reduces the thickness of the fat layer in the treated areas by 25% on average. The fat is slowly absorbed internally via the lymphatic system. Patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the final results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients.

Clinical studies involving hundreds of patients show that, for properly selected patients, CoolSculpting is an effective way to reduce fat without the expense of surgery (operating room, surgical supplies, OR personnel, anesthesia) and with less recovery time than liposuction. CoolSculpting is not intended as a weight-reduction program for overweight individuals. The best candidates for the procedure are people near their ideal body weight who eat well and exercise regularly but still have pockets of fat that have not responded to a healthy lifestyle. The best candidates are seeking reduction for specific linear areas of fat. If greater results are desired after one treatment the same area may be able to be retreated, particularly for larger patients, as early as one month later.

Safety

CoolSculpting is safe because the delivery of precise cooling affects only targeted fat cells, leaving adjacent tissue unharmed and intact. Patients can generally sit or lie comfortably and read, work on their laptop or even nap during the procedure. The procedure is performed in a medical office without the need of anesthetic or sedation; though oral sedation (pills) are optional. However, if sedated, the client cannot drive for 24 hours.

What about liposuction?

CoolSculpting will not replace liposuction but may be an alternative treatment for removing smaller amounts of fat for clients not wanting or needing liposuction. We still offer standard and laser-assisted liposuction for clients who are not candidates for CoolSculpting and/or clients who want/need larger volumes removed from multiple areas.
