Will I still look like "me" after surgery?
Many of our patients report that, upon return to work and routine daily activities after their plastic surgery procedure, friends and acquaintances make the following remarks: "You look great, whats different about you? Did you change your hairstyle?" or "Have you been on vacation?"
We want ‘you’ to look like ‘you’, only more youthful, more rested and confident.
For example, many patients want to get rid of excess eye lid skin because they are frequently asked if they are tired or irritated. Patients with realistic expectations don’t want to look half their age but want to look refreshed, more youthful, more like their ‘old self’. Dr. Jervis can help you look rejuvenated while retaining your unique, individual features.
How do I talk to my friends and family about my choice to have cosmetic surgery? Once a secret pursuit of the rich and famous, makeovers are now affordable and available for anyone. While patients are typically thrilled by their new appearance, some are also saddened by the judgmental responses of co workers, family members and friends. Jealousy, strained relationships and even breakups can occur. While the majority of our loved ones are supportive, some (for their own private reasons) are not. The ASPS reports that the top 5 surgical procedures are: liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid lift, rhinoplasty and facelifts. Patients are coming in earlier for smaller procedures such as Botox, Dermal fillers, laser resurfacing and chemical peels until the time when they’re ready for more serious improvements.
Take liposuction for example, you might be accused of taking the easy way out. While diet and exercise are important in overall health and appearance, some of us are genetically disposed to unwanted fat deposits. The belly or saddle bags may be reduced with exercise but it may still be out of proportion with the rest of the body. Liposuction can quickly and easily remove the problem areas with little discomfort.
No one else sees what we see in the mirror. Cosmetic enhancement is a personal choice. Be understanding with those that try to discourage you. Some truly love us just the way we are, some are concerned about the safety of surgery and others have issues that have little to do with us and more with their feelings about themselves. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to tell everyone. Cosmetic surgery is meant to help you feel better about yourself, for yourself and no one else.
How can I tell if my plastic surgeon qualified?
One of the hallmarks of a qualified plastic surgeon is Board Certification. Dr Jervis is an ASPS member surgeon. ASPS surgeons are qualified, trained and properly certified. They adhere to a strict code of ethics, receive continuous education and operate only in accredited surgery facilities. An ASPS surgeon is your partner in cosmetic plastic surgery. Please refer to ‘About Dr Jervis’ for a full list of education, training and awards.
Is cosmetic surgery safe?
This is one of the most frequent and most important questions we are asked. The risks of plastic surgery reported in the medical literature are uncommon. Please don't hesitate to discuss any plastic surgery procedures you may be contemplating with Dr Jervis. We'll be happy to provide a report of any complications associated with cosmetic procedures you’re considering. We’re confident that you’ll find not only comfort, privacy and safety in Dr Jervis’ AAAASF accredited surgery facility.
What do I do to prepare for plastic surgery?
Preparation for plastic surgery starts with an in depth consultation with Dr Jervis. He will explain the procedures, answer questions, show his before and after photos of past patients who’ve had similar cosmetic surgery and go over all possible complications. He’ll be able to fully educate you to assure a successful outcome. Most of our patients have one or more consultations followed by a thorough preoperative assessment with Dr Jervis before undergoing any cosmetic surgical procedures. You will be provided with detailed written instructions including specific details about preparation, medications to avoid and aftercare
When do I go home after my plastic surgery?
You will be released from our surgery center approximately 1-3 hours after the completion of your procedure. Most cosmetic surgical procedures are done on an outpatient basis at our fully accredited AAAASF Surgery Center. Because you will go home after receiving sedation, you will need to make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive you home, to stay with you overnight and to drive you to our office for your first postoperative appointment.
How long will bruising and swelling last after my plastic surgery procedure?
People vary but for most plastic surgery procedures, postoperative bruising and swelling begins to resolve at the end of the first week. Full resolution of bruising or swelling may take two to three weeks depending on the type of procedure done. You may camouflage bruises fairly easily at seven to ten days with makeup.
How much pain will I have after my cosmetic surgery procedure?
After any plastic surgery procedure, some discomfort can be expected. All patients are provided with pain medication in the event that it is needed. Patients sometimes use prescription medications a few days after plastic surgery. At the time of the preoperative consultation, we will review with you exactly what sensation changes to expect as you recuperate. We'll make sure we keep you as comfortable as possible. Breast Augmentation patients have great sucess with the On- Q Painbuster.
What happens if I’ll be on my period during my surgery?
No problem, although some women are more sensitive during ‘that time of the month’, a tampon could be used with no change to your surgery plans.
When can I go back to work after my plastic surgery procedure?
Restrictions from work vary due to the type of work you do as well as the amount of surgery done. Generally one week to 10 days for minor surgery and two to three weeks for multiple procedures or more extensive plastic surgery. You’ll want to avoid aerobic activity (light walking is usually ok) , bending, lifting and straining during the postoperative period. Dr. Jervis can give you information on the specific plastic surgery procedure you're considering.
When can I exercise after my plastic surgery procedure?
Aerobic activities should be avoided for three weeks following surgery. Light walking is ok but any activity that increases your blood pressure will increase the amount of time it takes for postoperative swelling to resolve.
I'd like to do something to improve my appearance but I'm just not
ready for plastic surgery.
There are many alternatives to enhance one's appearance through conservative (nonsurgical) alternatives. Even if you are not ready for plastic surgery there are many things you can do to improve your appearance. Botox, injectables, laser skin treatments are just some of the treatments that can give you a younger, more rested appearance.
How much does plastic surgery cost?
The best time to evaluate the fees for plastic surgery procedures is after the initial consultation. One of the reasons it is difficult to give financial quotes ahead of time is that a quoted fee may unknowingly mislead a prospective patient. Quoting a fee to you implies that the plastic surgery procedure in question is the correct procedure for you.
More often than not, a patient will call asking for fees for a given plastic surgery procedure only to find at the initial consultation a completely different procedure is discussed. A patient may be under a completely false assumption about the costs of plastic surgery without the benefit of knowing if the procedure is an appropriate one for them.
Prices vary just as people vary. Liposuction for example will vary due to a person’s height, weight, the number of areas being treated, the use of a laser, etc.
We are happy to discuss our fees for plastic surgery procedures with you at any time but can only give a ballpark figure over the phone. Dr Jervis will break down what you’ve discussed with price options customized to your needs. To set up a consultation with Dr Jervis, please call us at 925-937-7100 or email us. At that time, we can also share information on financing plans.
I've thought a lot about this but I'm nervous. What can I do to feel more comfortable with my cosmetic surgery procedure?
It's ok to be nervous. One of the best ways to deal with nervousness is to educate yourself about cosmetic procedures. You may want a 2nd consultation with Dr Jervis to make sure all your questions and concerns have been answered. An educated patient knows when and if the time is right to proceed. We also have past patients who can call and give you insight on the entire process in 'laymans terms'.
Where can I learn more about plastic surgery?
We'd be happy to provide more references and resources on plastic surgery. Many of our existing patients agree that what helped them the most was talking to other patients who had undergone similar plastic surgery procedures. For each procedure we offer we have Before and After Photos, Procedure Information and FAQs that provide details of each plastic surgery procedure.
