As part of
the natural aging process, the skin and muscle of the lower face and
neck lose elasticity, resulting in jowls and a poor neck contour. Facelifts
are used to restore a more youthful appearance to the lower two-thirds
of the face, from the eyes down to the mid to lower neck. They are usually
performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, although
secondary or minor lifts can be done under local anesthesia and sedation.
Facelifts
remove excess skin and tighten underlying neck and facial muscles. Excess
fat and skin are removed through inconspicuous incisions placed behind
the hairline, under the chin, and within the natural curves around the
ears.
Facelifts
are often performed with other rejuvenating procedures such as an eyelid
lift, forehead lift, nose or chin reshaping, and chemical skin peels
and dermabrasions or laser resurfacing of wrinkles. Most sutures are
removed after 5 to 10 days and residual bruising can be covered by makeup.
Patients are generally ready to go out in public or back to work within
2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
