No matter what kind of physical shape you are in, there is likely at least one part of your body that you would like to improve. However, if you’ve ever tried “spot reduction” through various diets and exercises, chances are you didn’t end up with satisfying results. A term used to describe the idea of decreasing the amount of fat in one specific area (e.g. stomach or buttocks), spot reduction simply does not work.

Here’s why:

Most of us know that our muscles are responsible for eliminating fat. However, your fat cells contain chemical compounds called triglycerides that must be converted into glycerol beforehand. Once the fat cells become glycerol, they enter your bloodstream and enable your muscles to use them for energy. Unfortunately, since the fat cells in your arms are the same as the cells in your abdomen, your body is unable to distinguish which is which. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to spot reduce specific areas of your body.

Fortunately, at his Walnut Creek practice, Dr. William Jervis performs liposuction to help men and women of all ages effectively improve specific areas of their bodies. Also known as lipoplasty, this cosmetic treatment is performed by inserting a skinny tube called a cannula underneath the skin to permanently remove fat cells from just about any part of the body, usually after breaking down the fat cells with a laser probe. For younger clients and in those needing smaller amounts of fat removed, CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical alternative. CoolSculpting® freezes the fat through the skin and results in about 25 percent of the fat cells being programmed to die, and then they are absorbed through the lymphatic system.

Although a personalized consultation with Dr. Jervis will ultimately determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction, most candidates have the following:

  • Good skin elasticity

  • Excess fat deposits in the abdomen, arms, back, or thighs that are resistant to diet and exercise

  • Good overall health (patients should be physically fit and at a stable weight)
